About School Performance Maps: Maryland
School Performance Maps provides a "bird's eye view" of public school performance in Maryland.
School performance data is from the Maryland State Department of Education, Maryland Report Card reports, based on the results for each public school on the Maryland School Assessment (MSA). For each grade from 3rd through 8th, MSA results are reported as the percentage of students who tested as Basic, Proficient, or Advanced in each of math and reading. schoolperformancemaps.com has calculated a score to aggregate the results for each school and grade. The formula for the score is: Score = % Proficient Reading + (2 x % Advanced Reading) + % Proficient Math + (2 x % Advanced Math) resulting in a possible range of 0-400.
For high schools, schoolperformancemaps.com has calculated a score based on the English 2 High School Assessment (we elected not to use the Algebra assessment because in many high schools a large portion of students do not take that test). The formula for the score is: Score = % Proficient + (2 x % Advanced) resulting in a possible range of 0-200.
We then calculate the corresponding decile rank from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest) for that school and grade compared to schools across Maryland, which is displayed as a colored marker on the map. Clicking the map marker will provide additional information about the test results for that school, details for the selected grade, and links to more information about the school.
Locations of most schools are from latitude and longitude information ("geocodes") from the National Center for Education Statistics Common Core of Data for public schools. Other school addresses were geocoded using Yahoo Maps Geocoding API or geocoder.us. Accuracy of locations varies. You may need to zoom the map in to see markers that could be hidden behind others. Proximity of a residential address does not indicate inclusion in a school's attendance area; contact the local school district for attendance eligibility information.
